AD8 Dementia Screening: Early Alzheimer's Detection Test

What is AD8 Dementia Screening?

AD8 (Eight-item Informant Interview to Differentiate Aging and Dementia) is a widely used 8-question screening tool designed to detect early signs of dementia (including Alzheimer's). Unlike complex cognitive tests, AD8 is designed to be answered by an informant (a family member or caregiver) who knows the patient well. It distinguishes between normal aging (occasional forgetfulness) and potential dementia (interference with daily life). It focuses on changes in judgment, interest, repetition, and memory over the past few years.

Who Needs This Tool?

1. Caregivers & Families: If you notice your parent or spouse is becoming different (e.g., repeating stories, forgetting appointments), use this to check objectively. 2. Seniors (Self-Check): Although best answered by an informant, seniors can review these items to self-reflect. 3. Primary Care Physicians: A quick tool to decide if a referral to a neurologist is needed.

The 8 Indicators

The test checks for changes (not lifelong habits) in: 1. Judgment: Trouble with decisions (e.g., falling for scams). 2. Interest: Less interest in hobbies/activities. 3. Repetition: Repeating symptoms/questions/stories. 4. Learning: Trouble learning how to use a basic appliance or gadget. 5. Date/Time: Forgetting the month or year. 6. Finance: Trouble handling complicated financial affairs (taxes, bills). 7. Appointments: Forgetting appointments. 8. Thinking/Memory: Consistent daily problems with memory.

Scoring Interpretation

Score 0-1: Normal Aging Cognitive impairment is unlikely. Forgetfulness is likely due to normal aging or stress. Score 2 or higher: Suggests Cognitive Impairment There is a high likelihood of dementia. This is not a diagnosis, but a strong signal to seek medical evaluation. *Sensitivity: >84%, Specificity: >80% for detecting mild dementia.*

Action Plan

1. Seek medical advice: If score >= 2, bring the results to a neurologist or psychiatrist. 2. Prepare for MMSE/MoCA: Doctors will perform more detailed tests like MMSE. 3. Early Intervention: Early diagnosis allows for better management and planning.

FAQ

Q1: Is forgetting keys dementia?

Not necessarily. Forgetting where keys are is normal. Forgetting what a key is *for* is a sign of dementia.

Q2: Can depression look like dementia?

Yes. 'Pseudodementia' caused by depression can mimic memory loss. A doctor can differentiate them.
