About AD8 Dementia Screening Tool
What is the AD8 Dementia Screening Tool?
AD8 (Ascertain Dementia 8) is an internationally validated dementia screening tool consisting of 8 simple questions. It is specifically designed to detect very early cognitive function changes and help identify signs of dementia early on. The AD8 questionnaire is completed by a family member or caregiver who knows the person well, assessing changes in the person over the past several years across multiple dimensions including judgment, memory, interests, and learning ability.
Why is Early Screening Important?
Early symptoms of dementia are often mistaken for normal aging, leading to missed optimal treatment windows. Through AD8 screening, abnormal cognitive changes can be detected early, enabling prompt medical evaluation. Research shows that early diagnosis and intervention can effectively slow dementia progression and improve quality of life for both patients and families. AD8 has high sensitivity; when the score is ≥ 2 points, it is recommended to consult a neurologist or memory clinic promptly for further examination.
How to Properly Use the AD8 Screening Tool?
When using the AD8 screening tool, it should be completed by a family member or caregiver who knows the person well, not by the person being assessed. Each question evaluates changes in the person 'over the past several years' compared to before. Based on actual observations, choose 'Yes, a change', 'No, no change', or 'Don't know'. Answering 'Yes, a change' scores 1 point; other options score 0 points. After completing all 8 questions, the system automatically calculates the total score and provides risk assessment. If the total score is ≥ 2 points, medical consultation is strongly recommended.
What's Next After Screening?
If the AD8 score indicates high risk (≥ 2 points), promptly consult a neurologist, psychiatrist (geriatric psychiatry), or memory clinic. Physicians will conduct more detailed cognitive assessments, such as MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination), MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment), brain imaging (CT/MRI), etc., to determine if dementia is present and its type. You may bring this screening result to help physicians understand the situation. Additionally, you can contact dementia support organizations for assistance and resources.
