Your numbers in the formula

federal: $85,000.00 − $16,100.00 = $68,900.00 → $9,870.00

SS = 6.2% × $85,000.00 = $5,270.00

Medicare = 1.45% × $85,000.00 = $1,232.50

New York State income tax = $3,993.40

$85,000.00 − $0.00 − $20,365.90 = $64,634.10

÷ 26 = $2,485.93

How New York taxes a paycheck

New York adds a state income tax to the federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare that the federal take-home pay calculator explains, and two cities add their own: New York City and Yonkers, for people who live there. The calculator works each one out for wages paid in 2026:

take-home = W − pre-tax − federal − FICA − New York State tax − city tax

  • New York State tax starts from New York adjusted gross income, which is federal adjusted gross income with New York's additions and subtractions; for wages it leaves out 401(k) deferrals and cafeteria-plan premiums, as the IRS does. The standard deduction is $8,000 for a single filer or married filing separately, $16,050 for a joint return or surviving spouse and $11,200 for a head of household. The 2026 rate table has nine brackets, from 3.9% to 10.9%.
  • Recapture: once New York adjusted gross income passes $107,650, the tax is no longer read from the rate table. Worksheets in the state's instructions take back the benefit of the lower brackets, a little at a time over each $50,000 of income, until all taxable income is taxed at the rate of your top bracket.
  • New York City tax applies only to city residents. It is figured on the same taxable income as the state tax, with its own four brackets from 3.078% to 3.876%.
  • Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their New York State tax instead.

For a single filer the city's brackets begin at these lines of taxable income, and each figure is the amount printed in the state's 2026 instructions: over $12,000, $369 plus 3.762% of the excess; over $25,000, $858 plus 3.819% of the excess; over $50,000, $1,813 plus 3.876% of the excess. The state table works the same way, with base amounts rounded to whole dollars.

The calculator does not subtract New York credits, such as the household credit or the New York City school tax credit, and it has no field for dependents, whose exemptions lower New York taxable income on the estimated tax worksheet. Form IT-201 uses tax tables at lower incomes, so a return can differ from the rate table by a few dollars.

Like the federal take-home calculator, this page figures tax for one earner with one job. Married filing jointly here assumes your spouse has no wages, so the $32,200 federal joint standard deduction and the joint brackets all go to one salary, and for a couple who both work federal income tax is underestimated: at $85,000 each, the page shows $5,840.00 of federal tax on one salary, against $9,870.00 as that salary's half of the couple's joint tax. New York's joint brackets are wider too, so New York State tax is understated as well: $3,390.70 shown, against $4,156.65 as each salary's half of the couple's joint New York tax. The Additional Medicare Tax threshold for a joint return also counts the couple's combined wages, which are not added up here.

The calculator does not check the yearly limit the IRS sets on 401(k) contributions, which for 2026 is $24,500, plus $8,000 of catch-up from age 50, or $11,250 instead in a year you turn 60 to 63. Whatever you enter in the 401(k) field is treated as a pre-tax deferral, so an amount above the limit makes federal income tax look lower than it will be. New York starts from federal adjusted gross income, so the New York State and New York City lines are understated in the same way.

Worked example: $85,000 in New York, paid biweekly

  1. New York taxable income: $85,000 − $8,000 standard deduction = $77,000.00. New York adjusted gross income is below $107,650, so the rate table applies.
  2. New York State tax: $3,993.40.
  3. Living outside New York City and Yonkers, that is all: take-home pay is $64,634.10 a year, or $2,485.93 on each of 26 paychecks, after $9,870.00 of federal income tax and $6,502.50 of Social Security and Medicare.
  4. Living in New York City: $1,813 plus 3.876% of the amount over $50,000 = $2,859.52 of city tax, so take-home pay is $61,774.58 a year, or $2,375.95 a paycheck.
  5. Living in Yonkers: 16.75% × $3,993.40 = $668.89, for $2,460.20 a paycheck.

For a New York City resident at this salary, state and city tax together take 8.1% of pay.

What is different about a New York paycheck

Recapture above $107,650

A single filer earning $150,000 has $142,000.00 of New York taxable income. The rate table gives $7,810.65, but New York adjusted gross income is above $107,650, so the first worksheet applies: taxable income × 5.9% is compared with the table amount, and ($150,000 − $107,650) ÷ $50,000 = 0.847 of the difference is added back. The tax is $8,291.20, $480.55 more than the table. From $157,650 of New York adjusted gross income, and as long as taxable income stays at or below $215,400, all of it is taxed at 5.9%: at exactly $157,650 of wages that is $8,829.35.

A 401(k) contribution lowers both state and city tax

For a New York City resident at $85,000, putting $6,000 into a traditional 401(k) lowers New York State tax by $324.00 and New York City tax by $232.56, because both start from the same adjusted gross income. Social Security and Medicare stay the same, as everywhere.

Where you live, not where you work

The New York City tax on this page is the resident tax. Someone who lives in Westchester or New Jersey and works in Manhattan does not owe it, and someone who lives in Brooklyn and works in Long Island does. With the same salary, the New York City resident takes home $2,859.52 less a year than a neighbor just outside the city.

Frequently asked questions

I work in New York City but live outside it. Do I pay the city tax?

Not the New York City income tax on this page: the state's instructions figure it for New York City residents only. If you live in New York State outside the city, choose "Elsewhere" under Live in. If you live in another state, New York taxes your New York wages as a nonresident with a different computation (Form IT-203), which this calculator does not do.

Why is my New York tax higher than the rate table says?

Above $107,650 of New York adjusted gross income, the tax computation worksheets add back the benefit of the lower brackets. In the $150,000 example the rate table gives $7,810.65 and the worksheet $8,291.20. The calculator follows the worksheets, so its New York State line already includes the recapture.

Does Yonkers tax people who only work there?

Yes, through a separate nonresident earnings tax figured on Form Y-203, which this calculator does not include. The 16.75% surcharge here is the resident tax.

Are Paid Family Leave contributions included?

No. New York Paid Family Leave is funded by an employee payroll deduction whose rate the state sets each year, taken from after-tax wages. It is not part of this calculation, so subtract it if it appears on your pay stub.

We are married, file jointly and both work. Is the result right for us?

Not for federal income tax, and not for New York tax. With $85,000 each, this page shows $3,390.70 of New York State tax for one salary, while each salary's share of the couple's joint state tax is $4,156.65; federal tax is understated by $4,030.00. A joint return can also reach the recapture threshold on the couple's combined income even when neither salary does alone.

Which year do these figures apply to?

Wages paid in 2026: the New York State and New York City rate tables, standard deductions, recapture worksheets and the Yonkers surcharge printed in the 2026 instructions for Form IT-2105, and the 2026 federal figures. Each figure links to the page it was read from.
